Manchester City reportedly appears set to cash in on two full-backs this summer. Yan Couto and Issa Kabore both appear set for permanent moves away from the world champions. Both players could reportedly command handsome transfer fees, which will aid City’s planned summer spending.

Mike Minay has reported for the BBC that Manchester City is prepared to listen to offers for Yan Couto and Issa Kabore. Furthermore, Minay’s report indicates that Bayer Leverkusen, Serie A clubs, and Premier League clubs are expected to show interest in signing Couto. Minay also reports that the young Brazilian right-back could command a transfer fee of £40 million. He further reports that Kabore is in a similar situation to Couto, having impressed on loan at Luton Town this season.

Do the plans to sell Yan Couto and Issa Kabore indicate what Manchester City has planned for the right-back position this summer?

The willingness of Manchester City to listen to offers for Couto and Kabore may offer at a glimpse at City’s summer plans for the right-back position. There was hope that Yan Couto could potentially develop into an option for Pep Guardiola next season. The Brazilian international has caught the eye for Girona this season. But Minay’s report indicates that City don’t see Couto as a part of their first-team squad going forward. The same can be said for Kabore. Issa Kabore has shown this season at Luton Town that he can be a serviceable Premier League player. But that does appear a level below the standards City requires for the position.

Currently, Manchester City has Kyle Walker, Rico Lewis, and Manuel Akanji, who can play at right-back. The world champions may go into next season with the options they have at right-back. If that is the case, it may see Rico Lewis play a more prominent role next season. The England international has impressed again this season and does appear set for a bigger role in Pep Guardiola’s squad in the near future. There is, however, a scenario that may see City look to add another right-back.

Manchester City captain Kyle Walker has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer. A report from the Sun indicates that Walker is contemplating a move to the Gulf State. If Walker was to depart Manchester City, they would likely look to the transfer market. One such player who has been linked to City is Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong. Phil Thomas has previously reported for the Sun of City’s interest in Frimpong. As a player, Frimpong could slot into Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Manchester City’s right-back plans will be something to watch for this summer.

What Manchester City intends to do in regards to the right-back position is a story to watch for this summer. It does appear that two players won’t be in Manchester City’s future plans for the position. Yan Couto and Issa Kabore appear set for summer exits from the club.

Whether or not the champions look for a new right-back seems dependent on Kyle Walker’s future. If the England international departs this summer, Manchester City will be forced to look for a replacement. If he stays, the champions may focus on other positions this summer. Needs will dictate what Manchester City does in the summer transfer window. Right-back looks like another position that will be dependent on a wide range of scenarios this summer.
