Detroit Lions release CB Cam Sutton a day after Florida police announced a warrant for his arrest

The Detroit Lions released cornerback Cam Sutton on Thursday, a day after police in Florida went public with efforts to try and locate him in connection with an alleged assault in early March. Sutton is still apparently at-large from authorities.

Sutton, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, is wanted for aggravated battery domestic violence. They shared that Sutton is at large and they are seeking to arrest him on social media on Wednesday.

“He is wanted for Aggravated Battery – Domestic Violence. He may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a plate number of FL-AZ33QB,” the post said, in part.

The defensive back is coming off his first season with the Lions. He started all 17 games, tallying a career-high 65 tackles (50 solo), four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes defended. Sutton spent the previous six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.

He appeared in 84 games (39 starts) for Pittsburgh, compiling 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 38 passes defended. Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed with the Lions last offseason. He is slated to start at corner this season alongside Carlton Davis, whom Detroit acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Sutton’s contract with Detroit was a three-year deal worth $33 million, $22.5 million of which is guaranteed. In 16 games in 2022 with the Steelers, Sutton snatched three interceptions and racked up 43 total tackles.

He was originally selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Steelers and he continued to play there for the next six years of his pro career. In 84 games played in Pittsburgh, Sutton has racked up 168 tackles, two sacks, six forced fumbles, and eight interceptions. Not only that, he’s also tallied 38 passes defended, including 15 last year for Pittsburgh–by far the highest number of his career.

He played his college football with the Tennessee Volunteers, where he wrapped up his prolific career there as the school’s all-time leader with 37 passes defended (30 pass breakups, seven interceptions). Sutton also earned first team All-American honors from the Sporting News in 2015. Not only was he a dynamic cornerback, but he showed off his explosive playmaking ability as a punt returner, setting the school single-season record for punt return yards (467 yards).
