ESPY's Week
Hey,
Back from an exciting week at the ESPY's. I had a great time catching up with friends and old teammates I haven't seen in awhile. The ESPY's for me is an awesome display of REAL talent. People at the top of their game in every sport in full effect. The award show is pro sports meets hollywood and its an explosive mix. At the pre party I had a chance to rap with reigning olympic gold medalists in the 400 and 400 meter hurdles LaShawn Merrit and Angelo Taylor respectively. These guys should be given more love by the masses. Me being a track and field junkie I recognized these guys as many didn't. How are you the best in the world in an international sport and not get love? Very sad. Other musings included a chill session with Evander Holyfield who at 46 told me that he still is going to fight! He talked about how he ran a 4:3 forty yard dash in his early days playing football. I gave him the old look like I do when people pull 4:3's out of their mouths like it's an easy feat. He was adamant about it so I believed him. I was drawn to him by his candor and down to earth personality. I wish him the best in his next fight.
Is it me or is the red carpet at the ESPY's always so bright and burning hot. The photographers are always positioned so you're looking directly in the sun too! Samuel Jackson rocked the house as usual with his quips on the stars in the audience. The show seemed a little long this year but all in all was an successful event after some problems with the teleprompter.
Post party was absolutely BANANAS! Where can you find Stevie Wonder and Doug E Fresh on the same stage giving a tribute to Micheal Jackson in an impromptu performance. I was also enjoying the sounds by my good friend Biz Markie. Major electricity in the building as we partied until 1am. Totally worn out I had to get out of those dress shoes I'd been wearing since 4pm! There were many more experiences and stories to add in future blogs to stay tuned...
Peace
Griff

Sounds like a lot of fun. I was happy to see Phelps walk away with a ton of ESPYs. Hope your feet aren't hurting too much from that. Lol.
-
Agree, for Phelps to be a swimmer which is not extremely popular I was very happy for him to get the recognition he deserves amongst athletes from other sports.
-
Always good to see Athletes in a different light, enjoying and honoring each other. And the ESPY's always look soo fun
-
I loved watching the ESPY'S.....it was amazing to such talent in various sports!!! And to see them give mike Phelps so much love was awesome. I kept rewinding to see the most amazing plays...I loved it...and Samuel Jackson did a great job!!!
-
The television coverage is kind of corny. Especially with the placement of the VIP's in the crowd. Still enjoyed it though, especially the Arthur Ashe and Jimmy V portions.

I really would have been pissed if Phelps didn't win all the catergories he won. People keep complaining to me that Kobe should have won best male athlete. I'm gonna have to disagree with anyone who believes that. Kobe is amazing but Phelps accomplished something no other olympian in the history of the modern day olympics have accomplished.
I love the Arthur Ashe and Jimmy V portions as well. I always start crying like a baby during that. But those people always teach you to make the best out of your situation and you can accomplish what you set your mind to in the face of adversity. -
Phelps undeniably deserved all of his ESPY'S. He captured Americans hearts. So he smoked a little weed, who cares. He's already back to winning again.
The only thing with Phelps is that some of his medals wear team medals, is that kind of stretching the truth for most medals? I think Jesse Owens won 5 on his own?
I'm glad Leisak got his due, it was a classy gesture by Phelps.
Where was Hussein Bolt? He wasn't nominated for anything? That's not right -
I don't think it was a stretch for some of those medals. Yes it was a team effort but, he still took part of it. If Phelps didn't step up to the plate in his leg of the relays, bam there goes all hopes of another gold medal.
Usian Bolt was nominated and won best International Male Athlete. -
I think ESPY's were for American athlete's....correct me if I am wrong which is why Hussein Bolt was nominated....but, I agree he is an awesoe runner!!!! I loved the awards...especially the Arthur Ashe and Jimmy V awards!!! I cried like a baby!!!

Correction...that's why Hussein was NOT nominated!!!
